A2 Manchester Trip | February 2018

On Friday the 2nd of February, A2 students and staff went on our annual trip to kick start the ESA, this year visiting The Whitworth and Manchester City Gallery. Our students were given their theme 'Freedom and/or Limitations' on Thursday, and the trip was a great way to inspire them with artists and ideas for their pathways. We set off at 8.30am thanks to everyone arriving on time (well, pretty much!) and made our way across the Pennines. Aside from a minor stop/breakdown in Penistone where we were on edge as to whether we would actually make it out of Yorkshire... we arrived nice and early at just gone 10 o'clock.

This year The Whitworth was exhibiting artists such as John Stezaker, Cecily Brown, Barbara Brown and Raqs Media Collective. There was a great range of work to study for all titles, including sculpture, video, textiles, hand manipulation and paintings.

We then met for lunch in the lower promenade, and here we asked students to share the work they'd produced so far and get chance to see what everyone thought of the exhibitions. After lunch we spent a bit of time outside the Whitworth looking at the sculptures in the grounds, before moving swiftly on to the Manchester City Gallery.

The Manchester City Gallery has many traditional pieces in its permanent collection, best known for it's selection of 19th Century artwork, but also features exhibitions of current and contemporary artists. This year we saw work by Waqas Khan, Risham Syed, Neha Choksi and a collection exploring South Asian Design.

We set off back at around 4 o'clock, successfully missing rush hour traffic! On the way back we ran a Learner Voice survey, which will be up on the blog in the next few days. Finally, we arrived back about half 6.

Thanks to all our students for making this such a lovely trip, we hope you all found it useful moving forward with your ESA and we hope that you all enjoyed it too!
