This is a slightly belated artist of the month, as the last half term was so chaotic we forgot to do one for February and March! So these nominations have been given to students who have really been impressing us with the work they've been producing since the February holidays.

Where Are They Now? | Sohail Khalil

Here is a guest blog post from our wonderful ex Graphics and Photography student Sohail Khalil who graduated from TRC last year. Sohail was shortlisted for the Saatchi School Art prize in 2017, chosen as one of 20 artists from 24,000 entries! He is now studying Architecture at the University of Sheffield.

"Hi my name is Sohail Khalil, and I am an ex TRC student who studied Graphics and Photography during my A-Levels. After college I have gone on to study Undergraduate BA (Hons) Architecture at the University of Sheffield, and I’m in my first year there.

My time at the Art department has really helped my transition from college to university, as I have learnt many skills and techniques that have been really beneficial in the understanding of my current course. From printmaking to taking photos and using Photoshop and the Dark room, all these factors have had a big impact on the creative side of my designs. As well as the practical side I have also realised that the teaching style and the feedback that I have been receiving from Sarah, Abi, Lyn, Steve and Patience, has been really similar to the style at university. The idea of constant planning and development from feedback has been really helpful in my projects at university level. Even some of the small aspects that I learnt from college like timed life drawings using different hands and drawing mediums, which I never really liked :) have really helped my ability to capture the specific factors of an environment quickly, during site analysis.

As a long term career choice I have always wanted to become an Architect, which was my fixed goal during college. Through the Art department I also entered the Saatchi gallery schools prize, in which my work, ‘Isolated Space’ was shortlisted as part of an exhibition at the gallery. This was based on Parkhill another one of Sarah’s great ideas that took me out my comfort zone but really had a big impact on my work.

Lastly I would again like to thank Sarah, Abi, Lyn, Steve and Patience for all their hard work and support that they gave me during my time there. I really don’t think I could have done all this without them."

Thanks Sohail! He has also kindly let us have a look at some of the work he has been doing at university, here are just a few of his drawings:
