Welcome back everyone! To start off 2018 we have another guest blog post by one of our lovely ex-students Riannon Davies. Some of you may know Riannon from last year as she was always around in the department and even now just keeps coming back! In November she came in during our open evening to print Christmas cards for TRAC with current students, and I'm sure we'll be seeing her again soon :)
Thanks Riannon!
Helloooo!
My name is Riannon and I am an ex-student from
Thomas Rotherham College studying in 2015-2017. During my time here, I studied
Fine Art, Sociology and English Literature. Soon after finishing my A-levels, I
went on to study English Language and Sociology as a dual degree at The
University of Sheffield.
Although I decided not to continue studying
Fine Art at a higher level, the skills and qualifications I gained from the
department are still of great use to me today. Since leaving TRC, I was
fortunate enough to join Sheffield Uni PhotoSOC; a society that allows students
with a passion for art and photography to meet on a weekly basis and capture
the moments of a busy Sheffield city.
The work I have been creating with PhotoSOC
develops upon the skills I have acquired from TRC. The areas I have been
focusing on are a combination of creating photoshoots with a subject interest,
experimenting with environments, looking at how photos can be digitally/hand
manipulated, and working on how a photoshoot can aid Fine Art skills. Our most
recent project was focused on capturing light with different subjects…
The University of Sheffield offers a range of
programs for students to use specialist skills as a way of building experience
and sharing a passion for a subject area. A big advantage of studying fine art
at Thomas Rotherham College is that you aren’t restricted to a specific
technique - with access to cameras and equipment, I found that photography
helped me to channel my ideas into prints, paintings, and other physical work I
wanted to create.
Studying A-Level qualifications can be very
demanding, but Fine Art at Thomas Rotherham College offers more than just a
subject with the end goal of a qualification - it gives you a platform to
create concepts, explores how far you can push your skills, and channels your
ideas into areas you may not have previously considered.
In the future I hope to establish my own
website and business where I can create and sell my work alongside my
University Studies.
