Curtis Mann: Photography

Mann is a contemporary artist who has developed an ingenious technique of using household bleach and varnish to manipulate images in ways that create beautifully deteriorated patterns.Before applying bleach, he paints sections of the image with a clear varnish. When this has dried, he adds bleach which removes and deteriorates the unprotected areas but leaves the varnished sections intact.

El Anatsui: Sculptor

Anatsui is a contemporary sculptor who creates stand alone pieces and site specific works using everyday materials. He chooses his materials not just for their aesthetic value, but also because of the implied meanings and connotations that these materials bring to the work.

Opening Ceremony for Rotherham Hospital Sculpture

Back in November a group of our students submitted designs for The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (TRFT) to design a memorial to remember all the people who have donated organs and tissues for transplantation, and to recognise those that have benefited from these transplants.

 

Eight students in all submitted designs and Charlotte Cash’s ‘Lotus Flower’ was chosen.  Charlotte worked with the Artist Clinton Challanor to carve the sculpture with help from fellow student Lucy green and  Ngaire Burston who designed the open evening invite.  After much hard work from the students involved, Clinton and Lyn Hodnett (who expertly managed the project in Bev’s absence) the opening ceremony took place on Tuesday 26^th February.  Attended by the Mayor, clinicians and people affected by the issued around organ and tissue donation the opening was a great success. Charlotte was presented with her prize (an Ipad!) by the Mayor and we all enjoyed seeing the finished piece displayed so beautifully. We in the Art Department are very proud to have one of our students produce such a fantastic piece of work which will be on display for years to come.  Well done Charlotte and a huge thank you to Clinton Challanor and Lyn.

Charlotte's sculpture can be seen can be seen on the wall, in the seating area, opposite Boots, at Rotherham Hospital.

Sam Gilliam: Installation/Painting

Gilliam breaks painting free from the frame by taking unstretched canvases, staining, then draping them from ceilings and walls. Gilliam covers his canvases in flat solid fields of colour, rather than depicting anything figurative, in order to create universal images that can relate to all cultures.

Deeann Rieves: Painter/Textiles

Deeann Rieves is a young contemporary artist who layers paint, canvas, machine embroidery and lace to create delicate, fragile wall pieces. The works seen below are part of her 'spills and coverings' series. Rieves depicts coverings which have become worn, creating gaps and revealing the truth behind. The 'spills' which break out of the confines of the canvas frame represent the fragility of coverings and illusion as they have lost their support and become broken and shapeless.
