TRAC Craft Stall Event

Raising Money for a Sheffield Hospital Clinic

Another successful event for the Thomas Rotherham Arts Collective as £70 was raised for a Sheffield Hospital clinic, who recently held an enterprise at the facility for immediate individuals connected to the clinic. Elizabeth Redfern was the lead on this event as she suggested for the department to be involved in the project and to help raise money for the clinic. She also had a Henna stall at the event where she created some beautiful work on peoples hands. Since the moment Elizabeth recommended the event, the staff and students of the Art Department have been creating and printing Christmas gifts to be bought such as cards, labels, baubles and notebooks, using a range of gorgeous designs. I have never seen so many baubles being painted by Alex Hall!!

Although it was a chilly day, the weather held out and it was a successful event as there were many stalls selling quickly to the people who attended - we should be finding out soon how much money was raised altogether at the event so it will be updated in due course!!

Due to the success, they are hoping to hold a public event in Spring time which we are hoping to be involved with again! We will keep you updated on any upcoming events!

We will also be selling Christmas cards and other products on Christmas Jumper Day (14th December) in the courtyard at college to help raise money for the college charity. Keep a look out for us!

 

 

 

 

Meet your new Student Reps!

We are pleased to announce your student rep team!
Your reps are here to support you and to act as a messenger between students and staff. Our staff members will have regular meetings with them to discuss any issues raised by themselves or by you, and we will then work together closely to solve these and improve the department for everyone! We have a drop box on the student rep display board downstairs where you can anonymously post something you would like to be addressed in our next meeting which will be after Christmas. We are also working on an email address for the reps which we will keep you posted on. 

But in the meantime - please welcome your new student rep team!

Where Are They Now? | Matilda Todd

See below a guest post by one of our A2 Graphics students from last year who has kindly written about her experience here at TRC and how that has impacted the work she is now studying at university. Thank you Matilda!

I'm Matilda F. L. Todd who studied Graphics Communication at TRC between 2015-2017.

After TRC I went straight into uni where I am now doing a BA Honours Degree in Graphic Design at Manchester Metropolitan University in partnership with Manchester School of Art.

Since starting my degree, I have found that the way we used sketchbooks at A Level is a significant thing that is used at degree level. It helps to show how your thought processes are going and how it leads you to your final piece.

So far I have finished my first project that was on creating your own Alphabet and then making it a part of something. So I recommend that if you get your sketchbook work right at A Level, then you will find that it helps you a lot if you go straight into university or even if you decided to do a foundation course first.

At the moment, my aspiration is to go into Graphic Design that helps with body confidence for all genders. My goal for the future though is to go into CGI Animation for landscapes and or even character design.

Open Evening Festive Fun | TRAC

For this years (extremely busy!) open evening, we asked one of our lovely ex-students Riannon Davies to come in and print some Christmas cards for TRAC, along with some of our current students Oliwia Szymaska and Noah Smith. Oliwia and Riannon designed their blocks from paper snowflakes, which they then carved and printed onto blank greetings cards. Although we didn't manage to get any photographs of them in action, see below some the cards they printed (aren't they beautiful!?) - thanks girls!





If you are interested in designing a Christmas card for TRAC come and see one of us and we'll fix you up with a block of lino so you can design, carve and print anything you fancy! :) These can then be sold at craft fairs and stalls to help raise money for the department.

Where Are They Now? | Krysler Soriano

Krysler studied Photography here at TRC from 2015-2017. He has very kindly written us a guest blog post on what he has been up to since he left college in July. Take it away Krysler!

Hello there :)

I’m an ex-TRC student who studied there in 2015-17. The endorsements that I studied at TRC were Photography, BTEC ICT and Use of Maths. After my exams at TRC, I immediately started looking and applying for available software developer apprenticeships. I got accepted onto an apprenticeship doing the role of a tester not a developer, but I still do the course of a software developer. Some examples of languages that I have learnt are Linux, SQL (structure query language), Visual Basic.Net etc.

The role of my job is an apprentice test analyst and I work for a company called Sopra Banking Software in Sheffield.

Photography helped me to improved my creativity skills because in the testing world sometimes you need to be creative to test software in a different way, there are many types of testing for example; manual, automation, smoke, sanity, agile and more.

In the future I would like to be a successful and experienced software developer/tester.
