Tracey Emin

A consummate storyteller, Tracey Emin engages the viewer with her candid exploration of universal emotions. Well-known for her confessional art, Tracey Emin reveals intimate details from her life to engage the viewer with her expressions of universal emotions. Her ability to integrate her work and personal life enables Emin to establish an intimacy with the viewer.

The quilts are composed of swatches of fabric that are culled from her clothes, curtains and furniture, so the materials – as well as the words and images – tell her life story. It is also interesting that the refined craft of needlework is used to deal with themes of sexuality that are often brazenly vulgar, which acts as a brutal contrast between material and subject.

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio - Arrogant, rebellious and a murderer, Caravaggio's short and tempestuous life matched the drama of his works. Characterised by their dramatic, almost theatrical lighting, Caravaggio's paintings were controversial, popular, and hugely influential on succeeding generations of painters all over Europe. Below is the Sacrifice of Isaac, oil on canvas.

Forgotten Spaces Competition

The Forgotten Spaces competition was run by Sheffield Hallam University in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) open to professionals where the challenge was to redesign a ‘forgotten space’ within their community.  This was such a success they have opened it to schools and colleges in the local area - which is a fantastic opportunity for our students who are interested in Architecture!  A team of 5 students – Sam L, Michael L, Katie E, Alex H and Louise H went for a workshop with 2 current students on the BSC  Architecture and Environmental Design and BSC in Architecture Technology.  Suki and Anna explained the project, showing us some amazing slides and images but quickly moved onto redesigning a forgotten space there and then in the classroom.  The students had to think about light, (natural and unnatural), what the space would be used for and who would be using it.  They were taken through the design process step by step and left with loads of ideas to redesign our chosen ‘forgotten space’.

Busy working
We were picked up by Bev (perfectly on time!) and enjoyed a very uneventful return journey to college where we discussed thoughts and ideas of what we could do with the project.  So keen were the students 3 of them started immediately, dropped off at the Belvedere (our ‘forgotten space’) to take photographs ready to work from.  Luckily, the redevelopers were in and allowed them to take some exclusive photos of the interior!

Inspired and enthused by their trip, they will be coming in over half term to work on their ideas and prepare their submission.  A big thank you to Suki Sehmti and Anna-Marie Hobenael for their brilliant workshop and we can’t wait to start working on it!
