Artist of the Month | September 2016

Hello everyone!

If you've just joined us then welcome! I hope you've been enjoying your first few weeks in the art department here at Thomas Rotherham.

And if this is your second year here then welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely holiday and are now back into the swing of things and making the most of your final year in the department.

For those of you out there who aren't familiar with our blog, I would like to introduce you to artist of the month. In the art department we like to congratulate a student from each endorsement that has really impressed us in the past month. Whether that be the effort we see you putting in week after week, or whether you've really stunned us with a fantastic piece of work. We like to make sure that your hard work doesn't go unnoticed.

So without further ado, here are the artists that have really impressed us this past month:

Exhibition and Awards Evening 2016

The exhibition this year has been one of the biggest to date, with every single corner of the art rooms being used as residence for the finest work our students had to offer, and oh my, it was absolutely stunning!! Well done to everyone involved in this exhibition this year. It was such a big task and everyone did a smashing job, so good on you all!!

Both staff and students have been working tirelessly to make this look as fab as possible and it really paid off. And hats off to the students in our department who have done two endorsements and produced two superb exhibitions, one exhibition space is difficult it enough as it is!
You have all put a tremendous amount of effort into this and without you, there would be no beautiful exhibition for us to show off, so thank you. 

The feedback from parents and other staff members around the college has been wonderful, saying that the students work looks amazing, professional, and that the exhibition as a whole is magnificent!

So last Tuesday (21st June) we hosted the ever exciting exhibition evening which, as promised, consisted of lots of yummy food, drinks and prizes. Here are the students we felt deserved some extra recognition for their efforts this year:

Another thank you goes out to Emily Drabble, Michaela Richardson, Rebecca Peet and Sophie Beasley for their collaboration in producing amazing prints for the exhibition. Well done girls! 

We wish all our students the best luck in the future, we have loved having you these past two years and were forever impressed with the work you produced. Well done.

We are already excited for next year with our current new A2 students! Thank you to everyone who came to the exhibition.


 

Forgotten Spaces - Awards Evening 2016

After submitting the two teams' entries back in April to the Forgotten Spaces competition, we have eagerly been awaiting the awards evening on the 16th June to find out the results, view the degree show and the other entries. This year, there were 14 entries altogether so there were a lot of projects for the architectural judges to look through compared to the other years! Wine and nibbles were also laid out for all of the teams who attended the evening.

We submitted two entries to Sheffield Hallam University for the competition:

We were first introduced to the judges of the competition by the Head of the Architecture department of the University. We were also introduced to the individuals who were in charge of the competition itself, and who made it possible for us to become apart of this brilliant experience. All of the teams entries were individual in their own way as they all came from different schools and colleges, which meant a variety in age. Then it was time for the Drumroll!!

Team Uninhabited gained 3rd prize!
We were ecstatic and we were all very proud that we were given this recognition of achievement. Each of the students received a certificate with their individual names on and an architectural book named "101 Things I Learned in Architectural School" by Matthew Frederick. The Art Department also £100.00 to spend on resources and materials for the Art Department which we will put to full use for the students. Unfortunately, Team Creative Minds were not given a prize but they still did very well and showed support for their other team members so overall, it was a really good evening which we are eager to keep repeating in the future.

We have entered the Forgotten Spaces competition for the past five years and we have been awarded a place in the Top Three each year - even sometimes two places!! We are very proud of our students and we are eager to continue the competition with future students so we can keep the streak going!!

The winning entry:

The team was awarded for their visual presentation skills along with their idea, as the judges stated it was innovative and that they appreciated how the students planned to use the area for what it is rather than it being demolished. Their work is now displayed in the Architecture Degree Show at Sheffield Hallam University which is definitely something to proud of at this point in their education.

Forgotten Spaces 2016

This years Forgotten Spaces entries for 2016 have now been sent off! 

For those of you that do not know what it entails; it is a competition which is run by Sheffield Hallam University in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The aim of the competition is for students to design and develop a site within their local area to give  a fresh look, and explore potential solutions for reusing the ‘Forgotten Space’. It gives students the opportunity to gain an insight into the skills needed to regenerate and design spaces. 

Taking part in this competition is an amazing opportunity for anyone interested in studying architecture or other creative subjects. It gives you an understanding of what it is like to be an architect and the design process, and it is an impressive addition to your UCAS personal statement. You also get to attend a workshop that is held at the Sheffield Hallam University. This gives you the chance to discuss your ideas with architects and learn about new software that you can use in your projects! Well done to our two teams this year - 'Team Creative Minds' and 'Team Uninhabited', let's all keep our fingers crossed!!

The swish awards evening will be held on the 16th June 2016.

Team Creative Minds

Team Creative Minds chose Loxley Chapel, with their idea to renovate this site into a theatre space to give the neighborhood more venues for entertainment to help bring the community together. It would also be available for use by local primary schools, as a cinema, and as a venue for local concerts and gigs.

Team Uninhabited 

 

Charlie Yates, Leah May, Megan Strutt, Ella Shields, Briony Canning, Lauren Oxley

Team Uninhabited decided to transform the underneath of Tinsley Viaduct into a Skate Park to bring the youth community together in a fun and safe way. This would also include a children's playground in a Green area, and a Graffiti area designed to help remove the stigma of graffiti as a rebellious, ugly form of art and instead embrace it, giving people the facilities and opportunities to express themselves though graffiti. 

Great effort and great ideas from both teams, well done! Fingers crossed!!
