Forgotten Spaces Competition
The Forgotten Spaces competition was run by Sheffield Hallam University in conjunction with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) open to professionals where the challenge was to redesign a ‘forgotten space’ within their community. This was such a success they have opened it to schools and colleges in the local area - which is a fantastic opportunity for our students who are interested in Architecture! A team of 5 students – Sam L, Michael L, Katie E, Alex H and Louise H went for a workshop with 2 current students on the BSC Architecture and Environmental Design and BSC in Architecture Technology. Suki and Anna explained the project, showing us some amazing slides and images but quickly moved onto redesigning a forgotten space there and then in the classroom. The students had to think about light, (natural and unnatural), what the space would be used for and who would be using it. They were taken through the design process step by step and left with loads of ideas to redesign our chosen ‘forgotten space’.

We were picked up by Bev (perfectly on time!) and enjoyed a very uneventful return journey to college where we discussed thoughts and ideas of what we could do with the project. So keen were the students 3 of them started immediately, dropped off at the Belvedere (our ‘forgotten space’) to take photographs ready to work from. Luckily, the redevelopers were in and allowed them to take some exclusive photos of the interior!
Inspired and enthused by their trip, they will be coming in over half term to work on their ideas and prepare their submission. A big thank you to Suki Sehmti and Anna-Marie Hobenael for their brilliant workshop and we can’t wait to start working on it!

Anselm Kiefer
Anselm Kiefer is a multi-disciplinary Artist famous for his large scale paintings, installations and sculptures. He also uses mixed media and found objects within his work.
Scale is extremely important, the large imposing paintings relate closely to the large and imposing nature of his scultpures and installations:

Christo and Jeanne Claude
Christo and Jeanne Claude are collaborative Artists who specialise in creating large scale installations and sculptures in site specific locations. They are most well known for wrapping their chosen subjects, whether they are trees or buildings. More of their work can be seen here:

BIanca Chang

Bianca Chang is a young designer and paper artist based in Sydney, Australia. Inspired by the subtlety of tone on tone signage and the shadow-play of three-dimensional letterforms, she started working on a series of hand-cut graphic paper sculptures which she has since exhibited and continues to develop through gallery showings and private commissions.
The majority of her works are created by hand-plotting and cutting multiple sheets of 80gsm 100% recycled paper – minimising the impact of paper consumption and consciously transforming a typically disposable medium into a long term piece of art.
