Interview – Hollie Turner

For my application to Manchester School of Art (http://www.artdes.mmu.ac.uk/) I
was asked to submit an online portfolio using Blogger. I added 20 images of my
work from my A2 coursework each with a short description of about 100 words to
the Blog.
Once I’d sent this off I heard back pretty quickly
saying that I’d gotten an interview. When I was at the interview we were split
into two small groups – there were only 5 of us there- and while half of the
people had interviews a few students took the rest of us around the studios and
just explained more about the course from a student’s point of view. The
studios were really spacious and light, and they showed us all of the different
parts- for painting and printmaking and then the basement for sculpture. They
even showed us the room where L.S. Lowry studied when he was there.
Then we were taken for our interviews in some of
the studios. The man who was interviewing me asked me questions about the work
that I’d taken and my interests within art. He then looked over my grades and
personal statement, and asked me questions about some of the current political
issues today as he saw I was studying politics.
The interview only lasted around 15-20 minutes in
total – most of it taken up looking through my work- and the only time I felt a
little pressured was when he talked about preferring students with a foundation
degree. But, nevertheless he told me that he’d be offering me a place there and
then before telling me where the best local art galleries were for me to check
out before my train home!
